Children who are emotionally healthy are better able to establish and maintain positive relationships with adults and peers. Consider your own children or others you know and the different stages in their social-emotional development as they were growing up. Social-emotional development, however, involves more than just expressing emotions.

During early childhood, children start to develop a "self-concept," the attributes, abilities, attitudes and values that they believe define them. Social-emotional development. As early childhood professionals, we hear the term often. But our resources and efforts often skew toward identifying delays and tracking milestones in traditional developmental areas, such as communication, gross and fine motor skills, and problem solving. Beginning at birth, babies use vocalizations and body movements to begin building relationships. These relationships help young children feel a sense of comfort, safety and confidence—all necessary for forming friendships, communicating emotions and dealing with challenges. Ensuring that every child has strong social-emotional skills through screening, early identification, and competence-building exercises helps prepare them for school, stop the bullying epidemic, and improve their well-being. And all of this helps set children up for future success!

Social-Emotional Development in Preschool

This page presents an overview of the developmental tasks involved in the social and emotional development of children and teenagers which continues into adulthood. The presentation is based on the Eight Stages of Development developed by the psychiatrist, Erik Erikson in These stages are conceived in an almost architectural sense: satisfactory learning and resolution of each crisis is necessary if the child is to manage the next and subsequent ones satisfactorily, just as the foundation of a house is essential to the first floor, which in turn must be structurally sound to support and the second story, and so on.

A tremendous amount of social and emotional development takes place during early childhood. As kids experience temper tantrums, mood swings, and an expanding social world, they must learn more about their emotions as well as those of other people. Throughout the toddler years, temper tantrums are quite common. There's a good reason why people often refer to this stage as the "terrible twos"!
