While it depends on the individual hiring manager, sending it in two files is generally preferable. These two documents serve different functions in the application process. Your resume is a snapshot of your history and abilities while your cover letter introduces you. Consider that an applicant tracking system may not be able to read a single file correctly. An ATS processes resumes and cover letters into easily examined files.

Hiring managers may not read an application that didn't scan. For some companies, different managers read the cover letter and resume separately. They could send the single document to both parties, but if you make their lives more difficult, they won't think favorably of you.

Many online applications have separate upload boxes for the cover letter and resume. At best, the system won't allow you to upload one file. At worst, the hiring manager will decide you can't follow directions. You may as well keep them separate if companies are going to make you do it anyway. The exception here is if the job listing specifically requests a single file. In that case, you should obviously combine the two documents. Didn't see your question?

Unless a company specifies a specific format, you should generally send your cover letter as a PDF. If you save it in word, the employer may have a different version and that can cause formatting issues. Make sure to not only send your cover letter in PDF format, but your resume too! It's super important to stay consistent across documents and file types. PDF is usually better, and will look professional, but be aware that the computer systems used by some companies to manage job applications extract the text from cover letters and resumes. What's the easiest way to attach your resume and cover letter to an email message? It's important to send your attachments correctly, to include all the information you need so your email message is opened and read, and to let the receiver know how they can contact you to schedule an interview. What's most important is to follow the employer's instructions and send exactly what they have asked for in the format it's requested. If you don't, your message may end up in a spam or trash folder. When you are sending cover letter and resume attachments, the first step is to save your resume as a PDF or a Word document. This way the receiver will get a copy of the resume in the original format.

You can submit it as a separate document or make it part of one word processing document or portable document format, or PDF, file. A cover letter is an introduction to a potential employer that briefly discusses the position for which you are applying and one or two key reasons why you are qualified and then directs them to your resume. Start with an interesting opening sentence that makes the reader want to learn more about you, rather than simply stating you are applying for a particular position and that you are enclosing your resume. When submitting resumes by email, many people use the email message area to create cover letter contents instead of creating a separate word processing document or PDF file. If you choose to go this route, write your cover letter in a word processing document, rather than directly in your email to give you more spelling and proofing options and to prevent losing your work in an email crash.

Including your cover letter and resume in a single file can seem tidier and more efficient. While it depends on the individual hiring manager.

Attach the resume document to the email. You don't want anyone to have to open a Word doc / PDF to read your cover letter. maybe keep them in one document.
