Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE)

We believe this will help students to understand the relevance of religion in both modern British society and the current political climate, as well as consider the value of connectedness over the individual, and enable them to use critical thinking. Throughout their time at The Henry Box School, students will develop both their knowledge and understanding of religion, philosophy and ethics, and evaluation skills. They will develop core religious knowledge, particularly of the Abrahamic faiths and how they are related. This will help students appreciate diversity in British society and enable them to have an understanding of, and be equipped with, the terminology for key life events. The backbone of the Key Stage 3 curriculum is developing understanding the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This culminates in exploring the religious and political tensions surrounding Jerusalem, and how this impacts the wider world today, including religious persecution. Students also explore aspects of Buddhism a religion without a God , Hinduism through stories and Sikhism a religion with a political beginning.

Our GCSE Religious Studies specification provides opportunities for learners to follow a course that is coherent and that balances knowledge of core beliefs, teachings and practices of at least two religions, with an understanding of how they can be applied to philosophical and ethical themes. We believe and want pupils to know how religious education promotes discernment and enables pupils to combat prejudice, preparing them for adult life, employment and life-long learning. The Key Stage 3 curriculum has been designed to ensure that students become fluent in key terms and concepts so they will be able to discuss and explore issues of faith and practice within a modern society. At KS3 we aim to promote pupils ability to critically question the world around them and make sound judgments and reach logical conclusions. This program of study incorporates both Illuminating Pathways and Understanding Christianity in line with the Liverpool diocesan framework for Religious Studies.

In lessons, students not only examine the beliefs and practices of major world religions but they are also encouraged to grapple with thought-provoking and challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, issues of morality and what it means to be human. Students learn about and from religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. With the knowledge and skills gained through taking part in Religious Studies, students are enabled to develop their own ideas, values and identities. A real strength of our department lies in the regular and systematic developing of dialogue skills, which is further encouraged through embedding P4C lessons within the KS3 curriculum, so our students can participate positively and respectfully in our diverse society. We aim to develop students capable of articulating clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences, while respecting the right of others to differ.

Students are given the chance to develop their own attitudes to major ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia, social cohesion, marriage and family life.
