Hello and Welcome to our Guide to British Culture, Customs, Business Practices & Etiquette

The name of the country and the term "English" derive from the Old English word for one of the three Germanic peoples that invaded the British Isles in the fifth century C. Englishness is highly regionalized. The most important regional divide is between the south and the north. The south, chiefly represented by the regions of the southeast, southwest, East Anglia, and the Midlands, now contains the economically most dynamic sectors of the country, including the City the chief financial center of the United Kingdom and the seat of the national government, both in London. The north, the cradle of industrialization and the site of traditional smokestack industries, includes Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham, Merseyside, and Cheshire. Especially in the last decades of the twentieth century, the north has experienced deindustrialization, severe economic hardship, and cultural balkanization.

The Anglosphere is a group of English-speaking nations that share common cultural and historical ties to the United Kingdom , [1] [2] and which today maintain close political, diplomatic and military co-operation. While the nations included in different sources vary, the Anglosphere is usually not considered to include all countries where English is an official language, so it is not synonymous with anglophone , though the nations that are commonly included were all once part of the British Empire. The definition is usually taken to include these developed countries : Australia , Canada , New Zealand , and the United Kingdom , [4] [5] [6] [7] and the United States [8] [9] [10] [11] in a grouping called the core Anglosphere. This term can also encompass the Republic of Ireland [7] [12] [13] and the Commonwealth Caribbean countries such as The Bahamas , Barbados , and Jamaica. The term Anglosphere was first coined, but not explicitly defined, by the science fiction writer Neal Stephenson in his book The Diamond Age , published in The five main "core" countries in the Anglosphere Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States are all developed countries and maintain a close affinity of cultural, diplomatic and military links with one another. All are aligned under such programmes as: [12] [15] [17] [14] [18] [19].

Social Darwinism refers to various theories that emerged in Western Europe and North America in the s that applied biological concepts of natural selection and survival of the fittest to sociology, economics, and politics. Various social Darwinist schools of thought differ on which groups of people are the strong and which are the weak , and also differ on the precise mechanisms that reward strength and punish weakness. Social Darwinism declined in popularity as a purportedly scientific concept following the First World War , and was largely discredited by the end of the Second World War —partially due to its association with Nazism and partially due to a growing scientific consensus that it was scientifically groundless. Scholars debate the extent to which the various social Darwinist ideologies reflect Charles Darwin 's own views on human social and economic issues. His writings have passages that can be interpreted as opposing aggressive individualism, while other passages appear to promote it. Spencer supported laissez-faire capitalism on the basis of his Lamarckian belief that struggle for survival spurred self-improvement which could be inherited. The term Darwinism was coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in his March review of On the Origin of Species , [17] and by the s it was used to describe a range of concepts of evolution or development, without any specific commitment to Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection.

Anglosphere

English literature , the body of written works produced in the English language by inhabitants of the British Isles including Ireland from the 7th century to the present day. The major literatures written in English outside the British Isles are treated separately under American literature , Australian literature , Canadian literature , and New Zealand literature. English literature has sometimes been stigmatized as insular. Yet in the Middle Ages the Old English literature of the subjugated Saxons was leavened by the Latin and Anglo-Norman writings , eminently foreign in origin, in which the churchmen and the Norman conquerors expressed themselves. From this combination emerged a flexible and subtle linguistic instrument exploited by Geoffrey Chaucer and brought to supreme application by William Shakespeare.

During the Victorian period , Britain was a powerful nation with a rich culture. It had a stable government, a growing state, and an expanding franchise. It also controlled a large empire, and it was wealthy, in part because of its degree of industrialization and its imperial holdings and in spite of the fact that three-fourths or more of its population was working-class. Late in the period, Britain began to decline as a global political and economic power relative to other major powers, particularly the United States, but this decline was not acutely noticeable until after World War II.
