With COVID now spreading in India, massive consequences to health and livelihoods are feared, and the government has imposed a day national lockdown to limit virus transmission. Given the precarious livelihoods of many Indians, agriculture, food security, and safety net policy and program responses are also urgently required. Mahendra Dev, an experienced academic and policy maker in India, provides additional insights into what actions and reforms are needed, and soon. India has taken early action to limit the spread of COVID, ordering a day nationwide lockdown for its population of 1. The novel coronavirus has spread widely in India relatively recently compared to other countries, and the number of reported infections is low so far, with 5, cases and deaths as of April 8. Food security is a measure of the availability of food and individuals' ability to access it. There is evidence of food security being a concern many thousands of years ago, with central authorities in ancient China and ancient Egypt being known to release food from storage in times of famine. At the World Food Conference the term "food security" was defined with an emphasis on supply; food security is defined as the "availability at all times of adequate, nourishing, diverse, balanced and moderate world food supplies of basic foodstuffs to sustain a steady expansion of food consumption and to offset fluctuations in production and prices". The final report of the World Food Summit states that food security "exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Household food security exists when all members, at all times, have access to enough food for an active, healthy life.

We work to improve food and nutrition security through effective partnerships, strategic development, and targeted use of funds. We work to support smallholder farmers and their families by strengthening sustainable and resilient food and agriculture systems. Through long-term investments in agriculture, food and nutrition security , our projects create employment opportunities, generate incomes, and reduce rural poverty. Globally, more than million people go to bed hungry every day. Until three years ago, Remzi Bala had a small family homestead in central Kosovo, but with just one old tractor and no livestock, he struggled to make the farm productive, let alone profitable. That changed in , when he applied for his first loan with KEP Trust, a leading microfinance institution in Kosovo.

In a world that produces enough food for everyone, it is unacceptable that million people suffer from hunger or, in other words, their food security is not guaranteed. The availability, access and consumption of nutritional food guarantees food security. Our food security and livelihood projects, as well as dealing with issues regarding production, access and income, help prevent and anticipate future outbreaks of malnutrition. Projects designed to promote agricultural production and the activity of local markets, support micro-enterprise initiatives, etc. The causes of food insecurity depend on a range of factors - national and international policies that affect agricultural development or trade; food price fluctuations; pandemics like malaria or TB; armed conflict; and natural disasters. For this reason, we coordinate food security activities with those that deal with nutrition, water and sanitation and health.
Climate change negatively affects all four pillars of food security: availability, access, utilisation and stability. Food availability may be reduced by negative climate change impacts on productivity of crops, livestock and fish, due, for instance, to increases in temperature and changes in rainfall patterns. Productivity is also negatively affected by increased pests and diseases, as well as changing distributions of pollinators under climate change. Food access and its stability may be affected through disruption of markets, prices, infrastructure, transport, manufacture, and retail, as well as direct and indirect changes in income and food purchasing power of low-income consumers. Food utilisation may be directly affected by climate change due to increases in mycotoxins in food and feed with rising temperatures and increased frequencies of extreme events, and indirectly through effects on health. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations can increase yields at lower temperature increases, but tend to decrease protein content in many crops, reducing their nutritional values. Extreme events, for example, flooding, will affect the stability of food supply directly through disruption of transport and markets.
Project Background. The project focus is on promoting short-term changes in high-impact nutrition behaviours and practices that are known to contribute to stunting reduction in the medium- and long-term. The project complements other agricultural efforts such as the ACDP , which are designed to raise agricultural productivity and income, but will not address the gap in production and consumption of micronutrient-rich foods, thereby reducing stunting. In total, the project directly benefits about 1. Secondary beneficiaries which include primary school teachers and school children; VHTs; agriculture, education, and health line ministry extension workers at central, district, and sub county levels ; and District Nutrition Coordinating Committees.
