The Principles of Teaching, Learning and Assessment focus on the provision of a school and class environment that is intellectually, socially and physically supportive of learning. The principles assist whole-school planning and individual classroom practice. It is essential, therefore, to ensure that there is a shared understanding of them within particular school communities and a collaborative effort to implement these principles in ways appropriate to individual schools. Learning experiences should enable students to observe and practise the actual processes, products, skills and values that are expected of them. For example, students are more likely to understand and make sense of mathematical, scientific or social science ideas if the information and experiences they engage with are inherently meaningful. They are more likely to write, perform or design well if they see the writing, performing or designing processes modelled and encounter examples of 'good' writing, 'good' performance or 'good' design.

Although Science for All Americans emphasizes what students should learn, it also recognizes that how science is taught is equally important. In planning instruction, effective teachers draw on a growing body of research knowledge about the nature of learning and on craft knowledge about teaching that has stood the test of time. Typically, they consider the special characteristics of the material to be learned, the background of their students, and the conditions under which the teaching and learning are to take place. Many of those principles apply to learning and teaching in general, but clearly some are especially important in science, mathematics, and technology education. For convenience, learning and teaching are presented here in separate sections, even though they are closely interrelated. Cognitive research is revealing that even with what is taken to be good instruction, many students, including academically talented ones, understand less than we think they do.

Coronavirus Information: Bradley University will continue on-campus, in-person classes for the spring semester with limited restrictions. A study at Bradley was undertaken to identify best practices for using Sakai in teaching and learning. The goal of the research was to develop recommendations for effective teaching using Sakai as a course supplement. A related goal was to increase student achievement and mastery of course material. Based on the literature and the experience of the teaching faculty, ten principles of effective teaching were recommended: 1 create an active learning environment, 2 focus attention, 3 connect knowledge, 4 help students organize their knowledge, 5 provide timely feedback, 6 demand quality, 7 balance high expectations with student support, 8 enhance motivation to learn, 9 communicate your message in a variety of ways, and 10 help students to productively manage their time.

Learning principles are guidelines for the ways in which people learn most effectively. The more these principles are reflected in training, the more effective training is likely to be. Research suggests that they apply equally to domestic and international situations. These are the basic principles or conditions that facilitate learning. Learning is a change in behavior as a result of experience. All living is learning. Learning can be defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior potentiality that results from reinforced practice or experience.
